Reliability, Validity and Clinical Usefulness of the Korean Version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)
Park Kyung-Yeon

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to verify the reliability, validity and clinical usefulness of the Korean version of the 9-item depression module of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) among adult Korean participants.

Methods: The PHQ-9 questionnaire was administered to 257 participants older than 18 years, chosen using stratified random sampling. Data from the 2014 community health survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were examined and analyzed by SPSS 23.0 with an independent t-test, factor analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.

Results: The PHQ-9 showed significant positive internal consistency (r=.80) and the discriminant validity with two group comparison by depression and non-depression group was significantly different (t=-7.19, p<.001). Two factors were extracted through a principal component analysis and the total variance explained was 51.67%.

Conclusion: The Korean version of the PHQ-9 is an appropriate screening tool for detection of depression among adult Koreans, and would be valuable in a primary health care setting.
